Orange sold more than 30,000 iPhone yesterday as it put the device on sale for the first time.
An Orange statement claimed it had smashed the first day record sales for a handset in the UK. However, this was disputed by an O2 spokeswoman, who said it had sold “considerably more” iPhones on its first day offering the handset.
Orange’s launch of the iPhone 3G and free iPhone 3GS has been backed by an aggressive multi-million-pound marketing campaign, You’re Covered, developed by creative agency Fallon, which claimed its 3G network covers more people than any of its rivals.
Rival operator 3, the only one of the UK’s top four operators not to have announced an iPhone distribution deal, immediately hit back with a formal complaint about the validity of the claim with the Advertising Standards Authority.
Orange has also launched a free iPhone app dedicated to its popular Orange Wednesdays two-for-one cinema offer which features discount vouchers along with a range of film-related content.
