There's more room for movies and music on new models of the free iPhone and the free iPod Touch, with Apple announcing today greatly expanded memory for the popular multimedia gizmos. But for free iPhone fans, the upgraded new models failed to address one of the phone's biggest shortcomings -- a slow, older-generation wireless network.
Apple today boosted the capacity of the Phone to 16 gigabytes of memory, double the current size, on new $499 models. Consumers can still choose the 8-gigabyte version for $399. For the free iPod touch, pretty much the same gadget except for wireless phone capabilities, a new 32-gigabyte model is available for $499. Older 16- and 8-gigabyte models are still available at $399 and $299, respectively.
The improvements to the free iPhone are in memory only. The free iPhone still works on the older EDGE Network from AT&T, the so-called second, or 2g generation data network that handles wireless e-mail and Internet browsing via the cellular network. The much faster 3g network the company has for other phone models from other manufacturers is still unavailable for free iPhone users.
That's expected to change this summer, when 3g free iPhone versions will enter the product pipeline.
The new free iPhone and iTouch memory increases will help meet increased demand for movies -- which Apple now rents through its popular iTunes online store -- and to address consumer complaints that the devices were too limited in music storage.
