Only days after O2 successfully announced winning the UK rights for the iphone, Vodafone claim they are "absolutely" in the running for the updated model.
The claim was made in Mumbai by Vodafone chief executive officer Arun Sarin, who suggested they would get another chance to win a contract within six to twelve months.

advertisementThis will come as bad news for O2, which plans to launch the British iphone on 9th November. The gadget on O2 costs upwards of £35 a month after an initial outlay of £269 for an 18 month contract.
The contract includes unlimited data downloads but is compromised by slow second generation speed.

Despite Apple's dismissive comments about 3G earlier this week it is very likely the updated model Vodafone are hoping to sell would include third generation technology. This would dramatically increase data speeds and be less reliant on wireless internet hotspots.

A Vodafone spokesperson said today: "O2 have the exclusive contract for the 2G iphone, but we expect the 3G phone to come within this period. We have a very good working relationship with Apple and this will continue in the future."
Apple hope to sell 10 million iphones in 2008, which would account for 1pc of the global mobile market.

If these aims are achieved mobile phones would become the third major business for the company, alongside ipds and Macintosh computers.
Apple chief executive and Steve Jobs claimed at London's Tuesday press conference that the decision to pick O2 in the UK was not an economic one, but instead because the companies were compatible.

When questioned why then O2 has been chosen in the UK but not in other regions Mr Jobs would not comment.

Subsequently Apple has announced T-Mobile will be the German network partner whereas orange has the rights in France. Vodafone is conspicuous by its absence by being a major player without the iphone in any market.
