It turns out that you won't need to spend that extra buck to use music you already own as an iPhone ringtone. You just need to rename the song files in iTunes. In the fast moving world of gadget news, this hack was discovered, published, disabled by Apple (via iTunes update) and then re-enabled in the space of a weekend.

How? Simple: Just rename the file, replacing the suffix .m4a with .m4r (this only works with AAC tracks, not MP3). Double click the file and it'll be added to your iPhone next time you sync. This works with both Windows and OS X flavors of iTunes

Unfortunately, Apple broke this hack with the iTunes 7.4.1 update, released over the weekend. But happily, according to Engadget, simply change the extension back to .m4a and everything will work.

Off you go. As ever, being a poor, iPhone-less European, I'm relying on our good readers to report back on this. Enjoy it while you can. iTunes 7.4.2 will likely be here any second...
